Stress has gotten a very bad rap lately. It is blamed for many of our chronic diseases, for the breakups of families and the failures of businesses. Yet, certain types of stress are essential to life.
If we don’t put stress on our muscles and use them, they waste away. If our bones do not get stressed from weight bearing they begin to lose their strength (osteoporosis). If our brains do not get stressed by continual learning and new experiences they begin to lose their capacities as well.
Forces in nature tend to be destructive. Water wears away rock. Sunlight changes water into vapor. Fire burns. Events in our life cause changes as well. Births, deaths, marriages, graduations, etc. Outside forces cause change.
Internal forces are constructive and allow us to adapt to changes and to external forces in our lives. Our internal forces are our inner strengths and capacities. Our nerve system helps us to adapt to changes in our external environment and also regulates what’s happening within our body. Our immune system adapts us to various bacteria, viruses and other irritants or organisms in our environment.
We also have internal systems to help us deal with mental and emotional stresses as well. When our inner resistance, our inherent internal systems, are stronger than external stresses, we continue to adapt and grow. Where we run into trouble is when external stress is greater than our inner ability to adapt to that stress.
Our internal resistance needs to be stronger than external stress in order for us to not be harmed by external stresses.
Understanding how stresses work, what can we do to allow ourselves to adapt and thrive to the best of our ability? A lot of focus is put on reducing external stresses. This is a good thing, especially when it comes to the self-imposed stresses in our life. However, external stresses are and always will be present.
What we really need to focus on is increasing our inner reserves and our inner ability to adapt. This is done in many ways. First and foremost, Chiropractic adjustments free the nerve system to adapt to changes both internally and externally. It is one of the greatest ways we can help ourselves cope with stresses and reduce the damaging effects on our bodies.
We increase the inner resistance of our bodies by giving it healthy nutritious foods with few to no toxic chemicals. We increase the strength and health of our bodies by exercising them - aerobic exercise (sustained activity for 20 minutes or more which raises heart rate and breathing), strength training and flexibility/stretching. We increase our mental capacity by learning new things, by reading books, by challenging
ourselves mentally.
Finally, we increase our emotional capacity by getting in touch with ourselves - who we really are, what our values are and living by them. We increase this capacity by accepting ourselves and understanding that it’s not what happens to us, but how we react to what happens to us that counts most.
This in a nutshell is the Chiropractic Wellness Lifestyle.

You are worth six thousand trillion dollars - Yale Biophysicist calculates
You are Priceless !!!
You and your loved ones may know that, but now a Yale University Biophysicist has determined scientifically that a pound of human flesh is worth about $111,475 and a whole body around $6 million.
And those prices only cover raw materials - the hormones, proteins, enzymes, RNA, DNA, amino acids and other complex biochemicals that are the stuff of life, Dr. Harold J. Morowitz says.
Fashioning the $6 million chemical shopping list into human cells might cost $6,000,000,000,000,000 (six thousand trillion dollars), Morowitz estimates. Assembling the resulting heap of cells into tissue, the tissue into organs, and the organs into a warm body ight drain all the treasuries of the world, with no guarantee of success, Morowitz concluded.
The Truth
We Chiropractors work with the subtle substance of the soul. We release the imprisoned impulse, the tiny rivulet of force, that emanates from the mind and flows over the nerves to cells and stirs them into life. We deal with the majestic power that transforms common food into living, loving, thinking clay; that robes the earth with beauty, and hues and scents the flowers with the glory of the air.
In the dim, dark, distant long ago, when the sun first bowed to the morning star, this power spoke and there was life; it quickened the slime of the sea and the dust of the earth and drove the cell to union with its fellows in countless living forms.
Thru aeons of time it finned the fish and winged the bird and fanged the beast. Endlessly, it worked, evolving its forms until it produced the crowning glory of them all. With tireless energy it blows the bubble of each individual life and then silently, relentlessly dissolves the form, and absorbs the spirit into itself again.
And yet you ask Can Chiropractic cure appendicitis or the flu? Have you more faith in a spoonful of medicine than in the power that animates the living world?
B. J. Palmer, D.C.
B.J's words remind us how miraculous we are and what an awesome power it is that created, runs and controls our body. It is the goal of each Chiropractic adjustment to release this power to fully express in the body.
Our bodies are so much more than a collection of chemicals. They are so much more than a machine-like collection of organs which can be replaced when they break down or malfunction.
Chiropractic is so much more than a treatment for back pain. It allows us fully to express our potential, our spirit and our humanity. Use it in a way which most effectively serves the miracle that you are!!!

School Bag Warning!!
As school bags are dusted off in readiness for the 2011 school year, the Chiropractors’Association of Australia (CAA) is warning parents and students about the long term impact of poorly fitted or over loaded backpacks and school bags.
According to Dr Billy Chow, CAA national spokesperson, mounting scientific evidence shows that heavy school bags place unnecessary stress on growing spines and can lead to acute and long-term back problems.
“The fact is, lugging an overloaded school bag to and from school can have long term healthimplications,” Dr Chow warned.
“To minimise the risk, students should limit the weight they carry in a school backpack to no more than 10 per cent of their body weight.
“That’s only around 4-5 kilos for a 40-50kg student and it quickly adds up when you throw in a few text books, pencil case, lunch box and water bottle,” he said.
A survey by CAA in Victoria into the average bag weights of 1,000 children found that almost 50 per cent of students carried bags well over the 10 per cent recommendation.
“Lifting a bag that is too heavy causes immediate strain on the spine,” Dr Chow explained.“The longer a child carries that load, the more severe the damage.“The problem is compounded even further by badly loaded bags, poor posture and the ‘fashion factor’ which dictates the latest trendy way for carrying the bag, which is never in line with the inbuilt ergonomic features.”
And while a wheeled trolley bag may seem like a healthier option, new research comparing backpack and trolley usage amongst six to eight year olds found that the trolley group was characterised by spinal rotation, which could add extra stress to growing backs.
A back’s best bet, according to the CAA is a fitted backpack, worn properly over both shoulders with the waist band done up.
To avoid the back to school backache, the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia recommends:
Backpacks should be no heavier than 10 per cent of a student’s weight when packed.
Make sure the backpack is sturdy and appropriately sized – no wider than the student’s chest.
Put comfort and fit at the top of the priority list, rather than good looks.
Choose a backpack with broad, padded shoulder straps.
Use both shoulder straps – never sling the pack over one shoulder.
Use waist straps attached – they are there for a good reason.
Don’t wear the backpack any lower than the hollow of the lower back.
Don’t overload the backpack – use school lockers and plan homework well in advance.
Place all heavy items at the base of the pack, close to the spine, for a better distribution of the weight.
